Mercury pollution a step closer to being curbed (San Francisco Chronicle, 12/11/2013)

The San Francisco Chronicle reports on the United States ratification of the Minamata Convention, a United Nations treaty on mercury pollution. Though the treaty makes great strides in protecting people from the harmful effects of mercury, the treaty exempts mascara.

The convention is trying to wipe mercury off the face of the planet, yet it exempts the use of mercury in certain cosmetics, said Breast Cancer Fund Director of Program and Policy Janet Nudelman.

"That doesn't make any sense. That begs the question, why not get it out of mascara as well?"
